The Plough, Scalby, Scarborough had been on my visit list for some time and it didn't disappoint. The food was amazing and the atmosphere was perfect. Will definitely re-visit.

I recently wrote about our stay at The Plough, Scalby. Whilst there we took advantage of the free time and enjoyed an evening meal in the restaurant/bar.

A recap.

The Plough Scalby is a quality pub/restaurant/accommodation located in the heart of Scalby, Scarborough. Which is found on the edge of the beautiful North York Moors.

Although in the village since 1899, it was recently taken over by The HQ Collection and refurbished to an amazing standard, which really defines it and sets it apart from other similar businesses in the area.

They are open for lunches and evening meals. With separate menus for children and also vegetarians. Plus there are always special boards dotted around.

Talk to me about the food.

Our table was ready and waiting for us, even though we were early, with a bottle of cool water being brought to our table which I always really like. We then browsed the menu. Although I had been recommended the tapas starter, I always feel full after my main and if space allows, will always choose a dessert. So we both opted to skip a starter.

I’d previously visited and enjoyed a steak at The Plough Scalby with friends, so I knew it would be somewhere my husband, who feels he’s a steak connoisseur needed to visit and would enjoy.

Being a creature of habit, I too chose the 8oz steak, along with my husband. Though, open to criticism I’m sure, I ordered my steak medium-well done.

The steak came served with peppercorn butter, which although fine with me, wasn’t something that interested my husband. More so when it subsequently arrived on top of the steak. We’d both just assumed that it would/may arrive on the side. He’s of the thinking that it’s all about the steak and quite rightly so. With no complaints from me, this was the perfect presentation for me. A handful of chips, a couple of battered onion rings and a nice lump of steak. What more do you need?

Dessert was sadly not on option for us. My husband doesn’t have a sweet tooth and although mine was telling me to get the Sticky Toffee Pudding, with salted caramel sauce and vanilla ice-cream may I add, my belly was not too sure. However, I see this as a pretty good reason to return.

So, what do you think?

Although having visited during the day and also had breakfast after our nights stay, I feel The Plough Scalby really comes alive and into its own during an evening. It has a really warm feel to it. The ambience is set with low lighting and candles lit throughout. Although a restaurant, it oozes a cosy ‘village’ feel, that allows it to also be a pub.

The service staff were extremely prompt and helpful. There seemed to be many staff floating around, which is always good to see.

Once finished our meal we proceeded to prop up the bar for a few drinks and the take the place in. Much to my unknowing husband, I was lying in wait to grab the comfy seats/sofas near the fire to the rear of the bar area, but, it seemed the people there were sadly far too comfy.

A return visit to sample the lunch menu is definitely on the cards. The Rump Steak, Sticky Onion & Melted Cheddar Ciabatta sounds amazing and The Plough 8oz Burger is right up my husbands street.

The Plough Scalby is a place who’s exterior and decor aren’t where the quality stops. A must have visit that I can guarantee won’t be your last.
